Colin From Accounts is an Australian comedy coming to BBC2, where neither of the principal leads – creators/writers Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer – are called Colin?
Well, there’s a bit of setup – also a little risque as Ashley (Dyer) crosses Gordon’s (Brammall) path, as she’s walking across the road, in front of his car, then flashes her right breast as he crosses the road, causing him to be distracted, and crashing into a stray dog.
What follows includes a bit of cringe comedy in there, which kinda works, and some daft moments, such as when the dog requires a protective collar cone, causing Ashley’s mother to exclaim, “Oh my God, the lamp’s moving!”
Meanwhile, I like the way vet receptionist Lisa (Eloise Snape) puts on a caring voice because they’re planning to put the canine to sleep, but then after a change of heart (hey, the dog’s in the trailer! He’ll be fine!), she’s back on reception, and he says, “Ah, so you DO have a normal voice(!)”
Overall, there was a very funny sleepwalking moment at the start of episode 2, and so far based on the initial two episodes, this is fairly amusing, but nothing I’d really want to tune into for any more.
That said, I did have a bellylaugh when a restaurant waiter announced to Gordon, “My name is Dean, and my pronouns are he/his”. Gordon rightly took the piss out of this millennial, saying to his date, Belinda, that because Dean is tall, the pronouns should be “fee/fi/fo/fum”, to which Belinda gently castigates him for it.
As for the title? “Colin from Accounts” is what they call the dog when they believe he’s being naughty… yes, they’ve been drinking.
Colin From Accounts begins tomorrow on BBC2 at 10pm, after which point every episode will be the BBC iPlayer.
