I, Frankenstein & Lone Survivor lead the new cinema releases & trailers – w/e January 31st 2014

ifrankensteinJanuary comes to a close and four new films see out the month in the form of: I Frankenstein, Lone Survivor, That Awkward Moment and Out of the Furnace.

I, Frankenstein

Frankenstein’s creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.

Starring Aaron Eckhart, Miranda Otto, Bill Nighy, Jai Courtney and Yvonne Strahovski, who UK TV viewers will know best as hottie Hannah McKay in Dexter, although she’s also appearing in this year’s new series of 24.

It’s only scored 5.5/10 on IMDB, and while I like a good 3D film, this hasn’t been shot in 3D – it’s all shot in 2D and the change done in post-conversion. That said, Gravity was incredible and while Bullock and Clooney *were* filmed in 3D, it’s obvious that they didn’t actually go into space to shoot it.

Judging by the trailer, despite the presence of wooden Eckhart, this looks like it’ll be a great pile of entertaining nonsense so I’m in!

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Lone Survivor

Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), a Navy Seal, and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious al Qaeda leader Ahmad Shahd, in late June 2005. After running into mountain herders and capturing them, they were left with no choice but to follow their rules of engagement or be imprisoned. Now Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare.

This is actually the film where an audience were trying to watch, on its release in the US, and one patron took exception to another using their mobile phone incessantly during the film – and quite rightly. However, quite UNrightly, the patron decided to take out a gun and shoot the mobile phone user! I guess the rest of the audience missed whatever was left of the film.

Directed by Peter Berg and also starring Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana, I found this trailer predictable and dull and I’m not inspired to see the film whatsoever.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

That Awkward Moment

Three best friends find themselves where we’ve all been – at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you have to decide “So…where is this going?”

Starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Imogen Poots, there’d be no awkward moments in turning this shite down.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Out of the Furnace

Russell (Christian Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) live in the economically-depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother becomes involved with one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.

Also starring Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe and Sam Shepard, while it’s got the cream of acting talent in many lead roles, the film itself looks a bit of a dull affair.
