My BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW of HALLOW ROAD!

Hallow Road Hallow Road opens with concerned parents Maddie (Rosamund PikeSaltburn) and Frank (Matthew RhysSaturday Night) receiving an anxious call from their daughter, Alice (Megan McDonnell), who’s in her car, thinks she might’ve had an accident and run someone over, on said titular thoroughfare.

After phoning for an ambulance, she subsequently contacts the above, since her mum is a paramedic, although she’d normally be better off having kept 999 on the phone until they arrive, for guidance, and it’s always the recommended course of action in such cases.

However, she wants her parents to drive over, which they’ll do – even though it’s gone 2am, and I was left wondering how long that was going to take, since this is mostly a one-location drama, where the location is the parents’ car, and they spend the majority of the time driving over, whilst often communicating via the phone.

But, what if someone else comes along before they get there?

Lukaskoret – Unplugged dark cover Behind the wheel, Depeche Mode

As such, this is largely a three-hander as Maddie and Frank do their fruit, while chatting to Alice, and it gives great performances from Ms Pike and Mr Rhys. That’s for the most part, though, since you’re watching across the approximate 75 minutes (before the end credits start), largely gripped while this is going on, but in trying to work out where it’s going, for me, it has a poor resolution of the events…

Hence, it’s like a very long, iffy episode of Inside No.9, but it was engaging for the majority of the duration.

There’s also a superb choral version of Depeche Mode’s Behind The Wheel, by composer Lorne Balfe, which plays during those closing credits. I can’t find out who performed it, but it sounds very similar to the version I’ve linked above, so I highly recommend giving that a listen.

NOTE: There is NO mid- or post-credits scene, but in this case, it’s worth sticking around for the Behind The Wheel choral cover.

Hallow Road is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
