Plodding On is the sixth and final episode of Inside No.9 Series 9, and the last EVER episode!
Before this aired, I was hoping we’d finally get the Robin Askwith bus conductor episode which they pretended to have last series. Still, I just knew the finale would NOT just be Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, as pretended in the billing, since they regularly throw a curveball.
That said, the pair ARE wearing black tie outfits as in what I thought was a placeholder image, shown week after week before the main picture showed up. So, it was hiding in plain sight, all along! I was tricked again!
This finale takes place in No.9, where the toilets are in a bar, and EVERY toilet door is marked with a ‘9’!
They’re also unisex, which is rare if any establishment. Still, with everyone appearing as themselves, we begin with Tim Key (Wicked Little Letters) and Katherine Parkinson (Significant Other), and about how the programme has been running for 9 series, whether or not it’s right time to end it now, whilst referencing other episodes that have been shown this series.
And then one of the toilet users is Robin Askwith! And talking to Reece about “the bus episode we never made“, entitled Hold On Tight, who’s moaning about never being in an episode of Inside No.9.
This is so Inside No.9!
Along the way, there’s discussions about auditioning for Amazon’s forthcoming Divine Comedy programme, along with dissent over who gets the job in question, but as for the last few minutes of the episode, oh, I don’t want to give any spoilers about that. If you haven’t seen it, just get it watched before someone does!
However, there is a discusion about what their next project together might be, but can it really be that? Spoiler below, although I also recommend you watch the episode BEFORE checking out the cast list below…
Finally, I was so glad we finally got Robin Askwith, and it would be great to finally get an episode of Hold On Tight, but to do so would undermine what we had here. They clearly filmed some of tonight’s episode over a year ago, so to sit on that idea and keep it quiet must be maddening! 😃
