Inventing Anna states at from the outset: “This whole story is completely true. Except for all the parts that are TOTALLY MADE UP.”
That’s because, since it’s centered around Anna Sorokin, aka Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), we’re told early on that, from a starting position in time of November 20th 2017, she’s in court facing many counts of grand larceny, while posing as a socialite and fake heiress, and attempting to steal millions of dollars. Unrepentant, she denies any wrongdoing… even though she posted pictures of herself on Instagram in multiple guises and outfits.
Meanwhile, journalist Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky) – who’s pregnant with her first child for her and her co-habiting boyfriend – wants to write a story about her for her magazine, despite the fact that her boss is reluctant as it doesn’t fit with the tone of articles they’re looking to publish.
Still, she’s eternally hopefully that things will change, and the opener shows her writing to, and going to visit Anna, who’s currently being held in Rikers Island prison, in the hope of being able to work together in the form of a full interview.
It’s interesting to see Ozark‘s Julia Garner in the lead role as Anna, but whether or not it’s intentional, her Russian accent is very questionable.
Inventing Anna should be an interesting premise, and I get that Anna has multiple ways to make herself seen her and there – prior to being locked up – but I can’t get into it. As such, I can’t really give the opening episode a score out of 10… it’s just that I’m not really feeling this, and I don’t feel compelled to continue.
There are 9 episodes in this series, but most of them go on for over an hour, so if it’s one for you, then there’s about ten hours worth of content, here.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Inventing Anna is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from Friday February 11th.
