Just as the Limited-Edition Godzilla Minus One Release Nears, Details Other Godzilla Projects Emerge
Godzilla Minus One set the standard for modern Godzilla and modern kaiju films. Telling a superbly grounded, humanising story with Godzilla as the manifestation of the protagonist’s inner strife made it very impactful. Quite rightly, it has enjoyed a strong home video run, and in October, a limited-edition steelbook copy will arrive.
Complete with a Blu-ray, Blu-ray bonus, and 4K UHD copy, and all at a rather reasonable price, its arrival lines up well with the future of Godzilla in Japanese and Hollywood films having recently been revealed. The big and most pressing news is that Godzilla Minus Zero is well on track and primed to premiere at NYFF.
First New York, then the World
The hotly anticipated sequel to the surprise summer hit and Academy Award winner from 2023, Godzilla Minus Zero, is leaning into the international appeal discovered by Minus One. Takashi Yamazaki, the cast, and the crew will be off to the 64th New York Film Festival on 26 September for its official world premiere.
For the rest of us, it’ll be a long wait until 3 November to see it in cinemas. This time, however, Minus Zero will release more simultaneously worldwide, with Toho getting well ahead of the release to establish localised partnerships for distribution, subtitles, and such.
With Minus One, the studio seemed to be caught out by its success. It took a while for it to release worldwide, but soon after, cinemas were scrambling to increase the number of screens showing it. By the end, it made over $105 million worldwide, which is a substantial haul for a non-English film.
Toho has also treated fans to a bit more information about the upcoming film. Godzilla Minus Zero will be the longest of its Japanese renditions by clocking in with a hefty run time of 135 minutes. The story itself will pick up two years after Minus One, still following the Shikishimas as an all-new calamity emerges.
Godzilla and Kong Off to Space?
Kaiju fans have enjoyed a fair bit of whiplash at the cinema since Minus One arrived, as bookending it have been two MonsterVerse flicks. Where Minus One wants to lean into human characters and the horror of a Godzilla encountering urbanisation, Godzilla x Kong is the opposite, leaning into the absurdity and bombastic nature of such an occurrence.
To the credit of MonsterVerse entries, it’s the big and crazy side of these kaiju characters that people seem to enjoy. It extends far beyond film, too. Given that 2024’s The New Empire brought in the MonsterVerse’s best worldwide box-office figure at $572.5 million, it could be assumed that the Toho entry helps to spur interest in this zanier take the following year.
Toho’s Godzilla comes roaring back to cinemas worldwide in November, but before that, fans can relive Minus One with a real collectors’ piece in the limited edition steelbook arriving in October.
