Kings looks like the kind of film which originally had ideas about fitting in for Oscar glory, but somehow fell down and fell out of the running, even though it stars former Oscar winner Halle Berry, and has a strong premise, set in 1992, and centering itself around the life of a foster family in South Central Los Angeles, a few weeks before the city erupts in violence following the verdict of the Rodney King trial.
Written and directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, who made the decent Mustang, the film also stars Daniel Craig, Issac Ryan Brown, Rick Ravanello, Kevin Carroll and Kirk Baltz, playing a cop, as he did in Reservoir Dogs as ear-less Marvin Nash.
Music comes from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, but I wasn’t wowed by this, and its score of 4.8/10 on IMDB isn’t great, either, although it’s only based on 125 votes so far.
Kings is due out on April 27th in the US, but as of yet, there’s no UK date.
