Klara And The Sun is an offbeat movie set in a post-World War III landscape, with the internet but a mere memory, as the powers that be took it away from us.
Jenna Ortega (Hurry Up Tomorrow) takes the lead as Klara, an android who talks to the sun, one of many put up for sale in a shop – a la Detroit: Become Human – but discounted because no-one wants to buy her… hang on, who WOULDN’T want a version of Jenna Ortega that you can take home??!
Similar to that videogame, this is a world where it’s normal for a parent like Chrissy (Amy Adams – Cape Fear (2026)) to buy such a droid for her teenager daughter, Josie (Mia Tharia – The Listeners), even though that’s not really how kids should be allowed to make friends, but once in her house – and from her viewpoint, she thinks the sun lives in a barn, some distance away, coming out during the day, before retiring at night time.
Josie’s also “Lifted”, a process for rich kids, which makes them more intelligent, so another irresponsible use of having too much money in the future, while others have a lot less, hence why Store Manager Natasha Lyonne (Fantastic Four: First Steps) is sleeping in her own store, making me wonder if it was going to turn into Backrooms, but it didn’t.
Klara And The Sun makes for amusing enough diversion, with smatterings of humour along the way – such as how a brothel makes use of this future tech by employing them as “Ho-Bots”, but because Taika Waititi makes for a poor director, this is about 20 minutes too long, and really does drag at times.
Hence, it’s worth a watch and has a great performance from Ortega, as well as Amy Adams now having made the transition from Lois Lane to ‘mumsy’ roles, but it’s not a first choice for anyone’s viewing.
Klara And The Sun is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD.
