Lie With Me is Posh People’s Problems.
Anna Fallmont (Charlie Brooks) and hubby Jake (Brett Tucker) emigrated to Australia two prior to the start of this mini-series’ events, but when we join them – or, at least, their house – the police have been called, and someone’s dead.
A young girl is asking for her mother, but what does live-in nanny Becky (Phoebe Roberts) know? Since Charlie Brooks is the lead in this – aka Janine from Eastenders – I did wonder if Barry had returned from the dead to get revenge…
Cue a flashback to five weeks earlier. Cue outdoor establishing shot with Anna going for a run, before the couple make a decision to hire Becky to look after their children and the house, because they’re oh, so busy with their lives. And, cue silly, obscure moment where Anna stops, stares at herself in the mirror, and bemoans “I am not my past“, as she’s previously had a trying time which has led to her being on Prozac.
Despite their plush abode, Anna and Jake are always at each other’s throats. He’s cheated on her once before, and she thinks he’s doing it again with a very thin female colleague.
The billing makes this sound like a TV version of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle – the 1991 thriller starring Rebecca De Mornay – but how close will Lie With Me be?
Either way, as the episode concluded, we learned exactly what was going on – which I won’t spoil here (even when posting my review after the episode has been broadcast) because that’s what My5 is for, but it was still preposterous nonsense with unlikeable characters, and like a bad American soap opera.
Note: IMDB also lists the title for this series as: With Intent.
