Love Rat sees Emma (Sally Lindsay – Cold Call, The Madame Blanc Mysteries) and Pete (Neil Morrissey) having split up, him looking like he’s just nipped off the set of Finders Keepers for five minutes.
To celebrate her new-found freedom, she’s off to Cyprus, but after getting to your hotel room, where do you go next? Well, for Emma, she’s off down to the beach, but for me, I’d be going for a walkabout.
By chance, she spots Niko Angeli (Gerald Kyd – War of the Sontarans – Doctor Who: Flux Series 13), the titular love rat – and he just happens to be reading the same book as her, Wuthering Heights. He’s also the hotel owner, but However, given that we already know he’s going to prove to be a scumbag, perhaps he’s really Fred Boggs from Scunthorpe?
Watching the opener, this is all very serviceable in the case of a millionaire who’s apparently run out of money and then disappears as soon as he’s got her cash, but it does feel very script-by-numbers so far.
And I get that the opener is just the set-up, but I do hope that she cuts his bloody head off! (probably unlikely, even after the watershed. This isn’t The Cyprus Chainsaw Masscre.)
However, in the meantime, Ms Lindsay does make a reference to my hometown of Stockport, as she jokes about winning the under-14 50 meter championship in 1987.
