My Friend Pedro on PC – The DVDfever Review

My Friend Pedro
My Friend Pedro is a fantastic bloody, roaring rampage of a 2.5D platformer.

When I first saw the trailer for this during Devolver Digital’s E3 2018 press conference, it looked more like an artist’s impression than a real game, with their fluid mechanics of your character running along, wall-jumping, dodging bullets, and even shooting in opposite directions, as well sometimes in all 360-degree directions, whilst also going slo-mo when you need it. But it’s real!

However, don’t just blow away the baddies, shoot barrels too, so they roll down and flatten them for you! Bear in mind, though, that because there’s so much to keep track of, that you can get in a bit of a muddle with the controls. This will also lead to you dying a lot, but it’s great that it doesn’t punish you too much for getting killed off, since you resume almost from where you left off. It’s more about the fun experience, rather than being one of those irritating arcade platformers which make you restart from the very beginning to the point where you ‘rage quit’, so kudos to Devolver and developers Deadtoast for sorting that out.

Oh, and you don’t have to despatch of EVERYONE on each level, but it’s more fun to do so. Plus, you get a points bonus for doing so.

There are infinite bullets in one of the weapons, but you still need to reload every so often. So, I guess that’s technically infinite magazines, then 🙂

Along the way, sometimes, the baddies drop ‘hearts’ to restore some health, and occasionally, when I went past their corpses, you can collect some machine gun rounds (so those aren’t infinite), hence the clicking sound of collecting ammo, so make a point of topping up!

And this is before I got to zoom along on a motorbike, which was phenomenal fun.

If the 40 levels isn’t a challenge in itself, then there’s also an online leaderboard where everyone’s doing a damn sight better than me, points-wise, but I don’t care. I’m not trying to be the best, but I just want to have fun with this.

Oh, I haven’t explained WHY you’re having to do this – because a banana told you to. Yes, that makes sense 😉

PS. There’s more gameplay I’ve recorded which is still to go online. Just need to edit it 🙂

Overall score: 8.5/10
