news page picGran Turismo 3 does the business…

Thanks to CTW.co.ukfor the following report :

Sony’s PlayStation 2 racing simulation Gran Turismo 3 notched upnearly 100,000 sales in its first two days on sale, representing ahuge kick start for the next gen platform.

Week 29 was in fact the PS2’s best week since the platform launched onNovember 24 last year, with game sales alone accounting for almost £6million (extrapolated from ChartTrack/ELSPA data).

This week’s report, issued last night, although bereft of statistics, revealed GT3 was already the fourth fastest selling game in the UK ofall time, just behind Pokemon Yellow, Gran Turismo 2, and WWFSmackdown 2. Pokemon Yellow, the third fastest-selling game, soldaround 106,000 units (extrapolated) upon its release June last year, which would place GT3 a few thousand behind Nintendo’s Game Boy bestseller – best guesses place the game’s retail sales at 92,000 units(extrapolated), which in value terms represents Sony’s best-everperformance.

Further clues are provided by the total number of PS2 games sold goingup by 149 per cent by units, and 161 per cent by value on last week.In fact, PS2 game sales alone accounted for almost £6 million(extrapolated), with GT3 accounting for approximately £3.7 million, not taking into account the amount the Logitech steering wheel soldthrough.

Given the installed base for the PS2 is around the 540,000 mark, a onein six uptake on the game in the first two days of release in midsummer represents a fantastic achievement for Sony.

Elsewhere in the chart, week 29 was up 11 per cent by units and some24 per cent by value. Overall sales climbed to around 815,000 units,or £18.49 million – an unprecedented level for the industry’straditionally barren period. Year on year, sales are up a whopping 70per cent by units and 67 per cent by value.

news page picBrass Eye cancellation: the real reason…?

Speculation has been rife over the reason for Channel 4 cancelling last night’sone-off special of Brass Eye and replacing it with a repeat of the”Drugs” and “Animals” episodes.

The following is taken from today’s Independent, printed without permission and as I don’t like censorshipI have un-*’d the singular “c-word” that was masked for the printmedia so be warned of the strong language. And the word is not “crikey”.

Chris Morris courts controversy again as ‘Brass Eye’ droppedBy Jade Garrett, Arts and Media Correspondent06 July 2001

‘Channel 4 has postponed a one-off edition of its comedy series Brass Eyeamid fears that it was to focus on the media’s treatment of paedophiles.

The programme, fronted by the maverick satirist Chris Morris, was due to bebroadcast last night. But its timing was likely to provoke complaints in thelight of the case of Danielle Jones, the schoolgirl who has been missing for15 days.

Morris, the writer and star, has continually courted controversy. A previoussketch was dropped for suggesting that a musical had been made about theYorkshire Ripper.Sutcliffe – The Musical was seen lit up on billboards inPiccadilly Circus and a man dressed as Peter Sutcliffe was seen rehearsingon stage while another comments on the show.

The show was pulled by Michael Grade, C4’s chief executive at the time, overconcerns that television guidelines might be broken. It was eventuallyscreened three months later, without the Ripper sketch. Morris soughtrevenge by including an obscene subliminal message during the show. “MichaelGrade is a cunt” flashed on screens but was virtually undetectable.

As an exponent of the on-air prank, Morris is seen as second to none, havinghad a series of encounters with broadcasting watchdogs. He was first takenoff air in 1994 when he told Radio 1 listeners that Michael Heseltine haddied. The singer Petula Clark and the presenter Jimmy Savile threatened tosue when they were later targeted. The first series of Brass Eye was due tobe screened in 1996 but was also delayed because of C4’s concern about thehumiliation likely to be heaped upon several household names. It eventuallyaired in 1997.

Channel 4 had given Brass Eye advance billing, promising that it would “takemedia terrorism to a level never seen on British TV before” and “smack theissues till they bleed”. A preview tape revealed Morris approachingdrug-dealers on the street wearing a nappy and a big orange ball on hishead. He then confused the increasingly hostile dealers by barking at them.Other snippets included a love song to Myra Hindley and a Kilroy-spoofdebate about “good Aids and bad Aids”.

Last night’s episode was due to be replaced with a repeat of a famousepisode in which pundits were tricked into condemning a fictitious new drugcalled “cake”. David Amess, then a Tory MP, was one victim.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman denied that the programme’s content had delayedbroadcast. “The programme isn’t finished and will be broadcast this monthsome time,” she said.’
