Dexter Season 4

After playing a mild-mannered funeral home director in Six Feet Under, Michael C. Hall makes a smooth transition to a serial killer in this original series. But the twist in this smart show is that Dexter chooses to prey only on other serial killers. As a child, Dexter was adopted by a cop (James Remar) who quickly realises that his new son is no ordinary boy. Since Dexter is compelled to kill, his law-abiding father pushes him to choose his quarry in a way that will best benefit society. As Dexter grows older, he works as a forensic blood-splatter expert in Miami, giving him a close view of other murderers and their handiwork. Stylish and blackly comic, this drama is adapted from Jeff Lindsay’s novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

This collection presents the complete fourth series which sees Dexter and his family move out to the suburbs along with their newborn baby boy.

Dexter Season 4 is out now on Blu-ray (£23.99) andDVD (£35.99).

Michael Jackson’s Vision

It might have been fate that MTV was born at the same time people began to notice the rare talent and artistic ingenuity of Michael Jackson. It proved to be a perfect match between the new television network and the young rising icon. Early on, Michael saw MTV’s potential as a force of its own and understood that it offered him the chance to pioneer a whole new visual style through which people could see music, not just listen to it. For the first time, artists had the opportunity to truly shape a vision of a story around their songs. For Michael, this meant treating the song as a “script” and creating a stand-alone film to tell that story.

In fact, Michael referred to each of these productions as a “short film” and not a “music video.” No other artist contributed more to the development of this art form than Michael Jackson. “Thriller,” which was rnamed the first (and only) music video ever to be inducted by the Library of Congress into the National Film Registry – an elite collection of only a few hundred films. In addition to this, Michael’s vision had immense cultural impact.

Here, for the first time, is the complete collection of all 35 of the short films produced by Michael during his career as a solo artist – 10 of which are appearing on DVD for the first time. All of the short films have been meticulously restored and remastered for the ultimate audio and visual experience and a bonus DVD includes seven additional videos including “Enjoy Yourself” with The Jacksons, “Say Say Say” with Paul McCartney and the previously unreleased video for “One More Chance.” This is a true representation of Michael Jackson’s Vision.

Michael Jackson’s Vision is out now on DVD (£17.99).

Metropolis [Reconstructed & Restored]

With its dizzying depiction of a futuristic cityscape and alluring female robot, Metropolis is among the most famous of all German films and the mother of sci-fi cinema (an influence on Blade Runner and Star Wars, among countless other films). Directed by the legendary Fritz Lang (M, Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse,The Big Heat, etc.), its jaw-dropping production values, iconic imagery, and modernist grandeur it was described by Luis Buñuel as ‘a captivating symphony of movement’ remain as powerful as ever.

Drawing on and defining classic sci-fi themes, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future in which society is thoroughly divided in two: while anonymous workers conduct their endless drudgery below ground their rulers enjoy a decadent life of leisure and luxury. When Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) ventures into the depths in search of the beautiful Maria (Brigitte Helm in her debut role), plans of rebellion are revealed and a Maria-replica robot is programmed by mad inventor Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) and master of Metropolis Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel) to incite the workers into a self-destructive riot.

A’Holy Grail’ among film finds, Metropolis is presented here in a newly reconstructed and restored version, as lavish and spectacular as ever thanks to the painstaking archival work of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung and the discovery of 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world. Lang’s enduring epic can finally be seen for the first time in 83 years as the director originally intended, and as seen by German cinema-goers in 1927.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • 150-minute reconstructed and restored 2010 version (including 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world)
  • Wraparound embossed sleeve
  • Pristine new HD transfer (1080p on Blu-ray)
  • New 2010 symphony orchestra studio recording of the original 1927 Gottfried Huppertz score in 5.1

Pacific: Complete HBO Series

From the producers of Band of Brothers, The Pacific tracks the real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines–Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda)–across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theatre during World War II. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.

Pacific: Complete HBO Series is out now on Blu-ray (£33.99) andDVD (£24.99).

Get Him to the Greek: Extended Party Edition

Get Him to the Greek reunites Jonah Hill and Russell Brand with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller in the story of a record company intern with two days to drag an uncooperative rock legend to Hollywood for a comeback concert. The comedy is the latest film from producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People).

Aaron Green (Hill) gets things done. The ambitious 24-year-old has been given a career-making assignment. His mission: Fly to London and escort a rock god to L.A.’s world famous Greek Theatre for the first-stop on a huge comeback tour. His record mogul boss, Sergio Roma (Sean Combs), gives him one warning: “The artist is the worst person on Earth. Turn your back on him at your own peril.”

British Rocker Aldous Snow (Brand) is a brilliant musician, but due to a bad break up and nose-diving career, has fallen off the wagon and is now a drunken disaster. Weary of “yes men” and scared he’s entering the “greatest hits” moment in his career, Snow’s in the midst of a nihilistic downward spiral. When he learns his true love, model/pop star Jackie Q (Rose Byrne), is in L.A., Aldous makes it his quest to win her back…right before kick-starting his world domination.

As the countdown to the concert begins, one innocent young man must navigate a minefield of London drug smuggles, New York City brawls and Vegas lap dances to deliver his charge safe and, sort of, sound…all while trying to remain faithful to his med student girlfriend (Elizabeth Moss). He may have to coax, lie to, enable and party with Aldous, but Aaron will get him to the Greek.

Get Him to the Greek: Extended Party Edition is out now on Blu-ray (£15.99) andDVD (£9.99).

news page picOne man and his acoustic guitar: Detroit Rebellion on CD…

DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Robertsstates that Detroit Rebellion cites Tennessee Ernie Ford, Leadbelly, Johnny Cash (and oddly, Joy Division, notthat you’d know it) as his influences, which leads to a kind of acoustic blues and folk rock, but Ellyconfirms that he is “a real troubadour”.
