DVDfever.co.uk – The Black Pirate on DVD
Park Circus
Posted: April 5th, 2011.
This 1926 silent tale of great adventure on the high seas stars Douglas Fairbanks – ‘The King of Hollywood’ – in one of his signature swashbuckling roles.
Synopsis:
Fairbanks plays an aristocrat who joins a pirate crew in order to avenge the death of his father. Along the way, he rescues a beautiful princess (Dove) discovered onboard the ship. This was the first major film to be made entirely in Technicolor and contains one of the silent screen’s most spectacular stunts Fairbanks sticks a knife into the top of a sail and lowers himself down as the knife rips though the canvas.
The film has been transferred from the restored 35mm two colour Technicolor negatives preserved from the Raymond Rohauer collection. This new transfer re-instates the original inter-title cards which had been replaced by Rohauer in the 1980s.
This DVD edition also has three sound options: the original 1926 orchestral score by Mortimer Wilson and conducted by Robert Israel, organ score by Lee Erwin and audio commentary by film historian Rudy Behlmer. The disc also includes the black and white Talkie Version of the film with narration by Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
