Love in the Afternoon (1972) and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend (1987) are two filmsdirected by the hugely successful, Oscar® nominated French director Eric Rohmer, who worked alongside Jean-Luc Godard and François Ruffaud, forming part of theNouvelle Vague (New Wave) period of French cinema.

Love in the Afternoon is an intriguing story about love and monogamy starringBernard Verley as Frédéric, a partner in a small Paris office who is happilymarried to Hélène (Françoise Verley). In the afternoons, Frédéric daydreamsabout other women, but has no intention of taking any action. One day, Chloé(Zouzou), who has been a mistress of an old friend, begins dropping by hisoffice. They meet as friends, irregularly in the afternoons, till eventuallyChloé decides to seduce Frédéric, causing him a moral dilemma. Love in theAfternoon is a fascinating film in which the action is subtle, true andintriguing. The film forms the final jewel in Rohmer’s six-piece Moral Talesset.

The César nominated My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend is the final installment ofRohmer’s “Comedies and Proverbs” and stars Emmanuelle Chaulet (Chocolat) asBlanche, a young clerk who lives in the Paris outskirts. In one of the mostblissfully relaxed romantic comedies of all time, Blanche befriends a girlcalled Lea (Sophie Renoir). Lea is going steady with Fabien (Eric Viellard)who is a friend to Alexandre (François-Eric Grendon) who is going steady withAdrienne (Anne-Laure Meury) but is however loved by Blanche. Somehow a way hasto be found to get out of this emotional chaos! By the end of this film, youmay know the characters better than they will ever know themselves.

Eric Rohmer is known for three qualities: a gentle touch, a simple style, andthe ability to craft some of the most delectable dialogue ever to grace thescreen. Few directors are capable of immersing us into their words in themanner of Rohmer – even today his movies remain rich and multi layeredmanaging to tweak the intellect, not emotions.

Arrow films are giving a new lease of life to Rohmer’s films, with these tworeleases forming part of the Eric Rohmer collection that will be released onDVD for the first time in the UK in the coming. The other titles in thecollection are:
