The Change sees central character Linda (Bridget Christie) going through the menopause.
She’s feeling the trappings of age as she turns 50, such as how everything she does with her kids seems to annoy them, along with forgetting words and referring to an implement to cut her birthday cake as “a cake knife thing”. She thinks it’s a sign of dementia, when it’s just the menopause. I get the same feeling sometimes, but it’s usually because I’m thinking of too many things at once and get distracted.
So, it’s time to find herself, as the 2.00:1 widescreen aspect ratio crops down to 2.39:1.
This involves hiring a caravan in a remote area, but after telling the locals she’s a vegetarian, they look at her like the customers of The Slaughtered Lamb did, when David and Jack turned up, late at night, in An American Werewolf In London.
Oh, and Linda also declares, “I am the Mick Lynch of dusting”. He’s the Rail union boss, leading the strikes for fair pay and conditions, but how many viewers will get that reference?
The Change sees two episodes showing each week, but none was available for preview prior to going live online, hence so far, I’ve only had chance to watch one episode. As the opener of this issues comedy neared its end, I was still waiting for the laughs to start, and then Paul Whitehouse‘s (Ghost Stories) character threw in a rape joke. No thanks.
The Change is on Channel 4 tonight at 10pm, with two episodes in the first week. It’s already available on All 4, Channel 4, whatever they’re calling it this week in full. It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
