The Hawk looked like a 90-minute film that was made as a five-hour working cut, and was just tee-sliced into a whole series.
Will Ferrell (You’re Cordially Invited) is the titular golfer, Lonnie Hawkins – with a dodgy ‘chin-beard’, and the actor clearly having a great time, but there’s soon a bit of tragedy as his caddy, Old Henry (Keith David – Shelby Oaks), dies just as he’s about to make a decent putt in a tournament.
Thrown into the mix is his son, Lance (Jimmy Tatro – Scream 7), who’s doing far better than him at the game, while Hawk’s still playing long after he should’ve retired, ex-wife Stacy (Molly Shannon – Promising Young Woman), and new caddy, Sam (Fortune Feimster – Zootopia 2), who he hired after her car broke down outside Walmart.
However, amongst some minor semblance of a plot as Lonnie tries to get his game back on track in his later years, The Hawk just feels like I’m watching a random series of disconnected scenes, such as when he and Lance start waffling about their “dick genes”.
Add in some fourth wall-breaking, such as when Sam looks a the camera while saying, “Bag. Heavy. VERY heavy.”, and a very bad driving scene, early on – including two cars crashing – that looks like AI gave it a big helping hand, and Ferrell obviously thinks he’s hit a Birdie with The Hawk, but it’s at least a Double Bogey.
If you’re a Will Ferrell obsessive, and don’t mind a half-assed script, tee off. Personally, I’ll stay in the 19th hole.
