The Husbands of River Song is the title of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special and, as you’d presume from the title – and you’d be right, Alex Kingston is back as River Song. Haven’t we had enough of her? I know I have, but we were promised (or threatened) one last episode featuring her character, so perhaps that’s why they’ve saved it for the Christmas one.
It’s also the first time she’s been in the show since Peter Capaldi took over the role of The Doctor, her last episode being The Name Of The Doctor, the Series 8 finale in May 2013.
The episode also features Matt Lucas as Nardole, Greg Davies as King Hydroflax – who starts this trailer as just a head, plus Nonso Anozie (most recently seen in Pan and Cinderella), Tom Chadbon, Aidan Cook, Rowan Polonski and Phillip Rhys.
The Husbands of River Song, the Doctor Who Christmas Special, is written by Steven Moffat and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Flatline, Time Heist, Listen) and is broadcast on BBC1 on Christmas Day at 5.15pm, which is very early for a Who episode, especially compared to series 9. They’re normally shown post-6pm on December 25th.
