The Perfect Couple centres around a posh toffs’ forthcoming wedding between Amelia (Eve Hewson – Bad Sisters) and Benji (Billy Howle – Chloe), the premise centres around the fact that someone spoils it by turning up dead. What a rotter!
The titular couple are author Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman – Expats) and Tag Winbury (Liev Schreiber – Asteroid City), while this whodunit follows a well-trod path in which everyone is brought in to be questioned, regardless of how much of a suspect that are, including bride-to-be Amelia, especially since she has her wedding dress on, yet the ceremony wasn’t due to start for a few hours.
Oh, and yes, Tag Winbury. What sort of name is Tag?!
Anyhoo, Greer has a book launch next week, but this cadaver calamity situation feels like something that might feature in one of her plots, yet for a writer who’s held in high esteem, I’m waiting for her to follow-up on Sean Hughes’ My Life As A Startled Bunny.
But the day before the wedding, Amelia starts acting weird, telling Benji he’s perfect and how she doesn’t deserve him, making me wonder if that’s a “It’s not you, it’s me” dumping speech?
Either way, on the morning of the wedding, as Taggart would say, “There’s been a mur-dah!”
I’ve seen the first two episodes of The Perfect Couple, and it’s as gripping as a non-stick pan, with about as much gravitas in the writing as a Channel 5 afternoon TV movie.
As for the acting, everyone’s sleepwalking through the script as if they’re dosed up on Mogadon, except for the opening credis, where the entire cast perform a dance routine, as if they’re trying to aim for the Bollywood market(!)
Who’s the dead individual? Well, obviously no spoilers from me, but if you put money on Piers Morgan, don’t bother trying to collect.
I was hoping it would be any of the men, because they all have beards!! What’s with the beards? Stop it!!
Oh, and in episode 2, amongst the murder situation, the cops start making jokes about dead people, in front of one of the family members. Seriously?!
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
The Perfect Couple is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from today.
