Transatlantic takes place in Marseille, France, in 1940, and the Nazis still need to be stopped. Given their actions, there are lots of refugees who are, like the Bonnie Tyler song, Lost in France, but their plan is to leave as soon as possible.
Given the magnificent locations on view, you’d wonder why, but then this isn’t Wish You Were Here, and Judith Chalmers was unavailable.
Leading the head of the Resistance, effectively, is Michelle Dubois… I mean, Mary Jayne Gold (Gillian Jacobs), and the main character amongst the refugees is Albert Hirschman (Lucas Englander), but a bit like Prison Break, while they might have a working plan, to go down to the docks and get on a boat to escape, there’s always going to be something turning up that throws a curveball and have them seeking a new path.
After hiding out in the Splendide hotel, once they find a safe route, they’re not just taking the easy way out, but for some, the plan is to get even more out before they cross over themselves. So, doing it for the greater good.
However, I just couldn’t really get into Transatlantic. It had some moments – such as with scenes between the two leads, Gillian Jacobs and Lucas Englander, but beyond that, it was rather dull. I also tried watching a second episode, but I really couldn’t get into this.
It does have great locations, but as a TV show, it’s like a slightly more serious version of Allo Allo. Hence, when Corey Stoll popped up, I couldn’t remember a thing about his character, but just reminisced about how if he’d returned as MODOK from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it might’ve made more sense…
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
Transatlantic is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix from Friday April 7th.
