We Might Regret This – The DVDfever Review – BBC1 – Kyla Harris, Darren Boyd

We Might Regret This We Might Regret This mixes age-gap drama with a disability factor, as Abe (Darren BoydThe Salisbury Poisonings) has left his wife, Jane (Sally PhillipsQueenie), to live with Canadian girlfriend Freya (Kyla Harris), having first followed her over to Canadaland, before they both returned to that there London.

His son, Levi (Edward BluemelThe Commuter), is also annoyed about the fact that Abe is old enough to be her Dad.

The secondary characters are drawn one-dimensionally, such as Freya’s live-in physiotherapist, Ty (Aasiya Shah), always saying the wrong thing, like being patronising to Abe, treating him as if he’s doing Freya a favour by sleeping with her because she’s tetraplegic.

Meanwhile, Freya’s best mate, Jo (Elena SaurelBuffering), turns up 10 hours early for a party, and invites herself to stay for a while.

We Might Regret This centres around cringey and awkward moments, such as when Freya goes for a job interview as a life model, and the building’s disabled toilet hasn’t yet been built, so a non-toilet situation is found, resulting in a bottle of urine that can’t be flushed away, so it gets dumped on the receptionist’s desk “for when the disabled toilet’s built”.

Okay, I get that such situations can come about, but if Freya had really needed the toilet as urgently as she did, she’d have gone while she was still on the same floor as the interview, not made that decision once she was down on the ground floor.

I get that there are points to be made, but when it’s in the form of a comedy/drama – with all the lines being based around disability – it feels like they’re just crammed in for the sake of it, and it becomes an issues drama, feeling more like it’s ticking a diversity box for the comedy/drama dept, rather than being made because it needed to be.

Additionally, a scene with a chance meeting that results in a particular pub toilet-based situation leaves that concluding in a way that makes no sense.

Add to that, Freya and Jo doing cocaine in the pub toilets. If we’re meant to sympathise with characters, druggies are not amongst that number.

And, Darren Boyd is proof that beards really age a man. Shave it off!

As such, one episode of this was more than enough for me.

We Might Regret This begins tonight on BBC2 at 10pm, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.

The entire series is now on the BBC iPlayer.
