Xbox One gets a price cut & comes combined with Titanfall

Yes, less than two months after Christmas and the announcement has been made that the Xbox One console is going to be discounted from February 28th.

You’ll get the regular console, one controller, the Kinect sensor, one month free Xbox Live Gold subscription, plus a digital download code for Titanfall – as opposed to a boxed copy, and the game will be playable from March 14th.

I figured we’d see a price cut in due course, and before the PS4 since Microsoft’s console is more expensive, but after about 6 months or, perhaps slightly earlier around Easter, but three months after release? Xbox UK MD Harvey Eagle has said that while the console is on track in terms of sales, Microsoft wants to capitalise on the biggest game launch of the year. Surely if it was “on track” it’d be beating the PS4?

He told Eurogamer: “The reason for doing this is about giving gamers in the UK the best value we can with Xbox One. That starts with the announcement we’re making about this new price point of £399 moving forward, and continues with the inclusion of the hottest game of the year in Titanfall.

In terms of our sales, this has been our most successful UK launch ever. I think we can say at this point already that both platforms are commercially successful, and I think that’s great news for the industry.

But I will also say we’re only a few months into a generation that’s going to last for many, many years. So we take a long-term view. This is very much a marathon for us, not a sprint, and we’re in it for the long haul.”

Xbox One has sold 3.9 million units as of the end of 2013, according to Microsoft, although Wikipedia states 3 million at that point compared to the PS4’s 5.3 million as of February 8th 2014.
