Cradled is the second episode of On The Edge Series 3, where Maia (Ellora Torchia) starts getting postpartum depression soon after the birth of her new baby, as she feels overwhelmed as thinks her other half, isn’t helping as much as he could be.
Before long, we see her baby is burbling nonsensical words, to which Maia asks playfully, “What are you saying?”, at which point the baby clearly utters a menacing phrase which, without subtitles on the preview, I can’t make out what it said, but it gives Maia a look as if she’s just found herself in The Omen.
Maia is very on edge about things, which I know is the point of the drama, but Ms Torchia gets this across brilliantly, such as when the baby cries, and imagines the cries are amplifying around louder than they are, even though everyone there would understand that newborn babies cry.
Another time, Maia let’s the baby out of her sight for a second and starts imagining all sorts of horrible things, along with other phrases, one of which I did make out – while she’s with her own mum, Yvonne (Juliet Aubrey), as the baby says “Don’t leave me with Maia”. However, I will need to watch this again on All4 so I can see it with subtitles.
We learn she had a difficult time with the birth, and starts to doubt her own abilities, and things go from bad to worse, but can she resolve things?
Cradled is broadcast tonight on Channel 4 at 10.30pm. The series is not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
After broadcast, the series will be on All 4.
There’s no Series 3 trailer online, so I’ve given the Series 2 trailer below.
