Dope Thief opens with Ray Driscoll (Brian Tyree Henry – Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire) and Manny Carvalho (Wagner Moura – Civil War) watching a house, as they’re government DEA agents, about to do a bust… except that they’re just pretending at that.
The pair originally met in nefarious circumstances (as occasional flashbacks show), but are really just there to steal the drugs, their weapons and their money, as well as royally winding up the druggies inside.
Both have suffered tragedy in their life, but are now looking for more people to bust, as they’ve gone through most of those available in Philadelphia, and while it can be lucrative, it’s also incredibly dangerous, with one particular bust going wrong big-time, having bitten off more than they can chew, and they might just get fingered…
So far, I’ve seen just the first two episodes – the latter of which has an engaging chase scene, which make up the initial episodes released on day one, but while it’s interesting to see Star Trek‘s Kate Mulgrew as Ray’s stepmum, even taking into account all the aspects thrown in which I don’t want to spoil, Dope Thief so far, quite frankly, a bit dull.
Dope Thief is on Apple TV+ from tomorrow, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. Initially, two episodes are available, and additional episodes will stream weekly.
