Dunkirk leads the new cinema releases and trailers July 21st 2017

Dunkirk This week, there are FIVE new films out for you to choose from: Christopher Nolan brings us huge war battles in 70mm IMAX in Dunkirk, the true story of Kevin Smith’s Clerks is told in the documentary Shooting Clerks, there’s an engaging French thriller in Scribe, Monster Island is a CGI film for kids about monsters on an island… and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is a kids CGI film with Kevin Hart.

Dunkirk is the first Christopher Nolan movie to hit the big screen since 2014’s Interstellar.

More down-to-earth this time, it tells the tale of the miraculous evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between May 27th and June 4th 1940, during the Battle of France in World War II.

The film isn’t short on big names, as it stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Gover and, somehow, One Direction’s Harry Styles!

If there’s one man that knows what to do with 70mm IMAX in 1.44:1, it’s Christopher Nolan. If he put out a film of him reading the phone book in 1.44:1, I’d probably pay £15 to go and see that in IMAX!

Most IMAX screens can only show the film in 1.90:1, which is the digital IMAX ratio, so try and seek out the 70mm version if you can, as that’ll open up to 1.44:1. If you’re in Manchester, make sure you go to the Vue Printworks as they are definitely showing it in that 70mm IMAX.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Shooting Clerks tells the true story of how convenience store clerk Kevin Smith made his grainy $27,000 1994 movie Clerks with maxed-out credit cards and the people who aided him in his indie crusade.

Written and directed by Christopher Downie, I loved Clerks, so I’m really looking forward to this… but I’d love to know what the budget was for the documentary? 😉

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Scribe

François Cluzet plays the unemployed Duval is contacted by a mysterious organization to transcribe intercepted calls. He accepts the job with no suspicions, since it restores stability to his life, but it will soon result in political shenanigans of all kinds.

This looks like it’ll be a cracking movie so I certainly want to check it out at some point.

Director: Thomas Kruithof
Also stars: Denis Podalydès, Sami Bouajila

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Monster Island

CGI film for kids about monsters on an island… yep.

Director: Leopoldo Aguilar
Stars: Fiona Hardingham, Roger Jackson, Jenifer Beth Kaplan

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Two overly imaginative pranksters named George and Harold hypnotize their principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

Starring Kevin Hart…. oh, it’s Kevin Hart. Say no more.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!
