Jack Ryan: Ghost War sees the titular hero, played by John Krasinski (Fountain Of Youth), having left the CIA for a regular job. But like Al Pacino in The Godfather Part III, just when he thinks he’s out, they pull him back in, for a joint operation with MI6… just a pick-up, apparently.
It’s very wordy as people stand round and explain the plot to each other, with Crown (Max Beesley – The Gentlemen) being a govt agent that was trained by Greer (Wendell Pierce – Superman), but thanks to a program known as Starling, he now feels betrayed, and must be stopped. So, it’s a rogue agent plot.
Sienna Miller (Twiggy) also comes along for the ride, as Emma Marlow, who’s quick with her guns in Dubai, which should really lead to her being arrested, but somehow, she ends up playing on the home team.
With some globetrotting including Dubai and London, Crown wants back “what Nigel took from me“, referring to another agent with questionable methods. So, everyone’s got secrets, and the plot seems to tie itself up in knots a bit, but it does lead to an amusing car chase in the capital. Alas, at the point when Jack’s driving and cuts up a cyclist in a cycle lane, what a shame it wasn’t Jeremy Vine 😉
I’ve been a bit out of the loop with Jack Ryan, as I only saw Season 1, prior to this spin-off movie, but while the script won’t win any Oscars, it’s daft and serviceable-enough hokum.
NOTE: There are no mid- nor post-credits scenes.
