Sunny – The DVDfever Review – Apple TV+ – Rashida Jones

Sunny Sunny centres around Suzie (Rashida JonesOn The Rocks), who’s just found out that the centre of her world is about to drop off, since after living the family life in Kyoto, her husband and son disappear in a plane crash, with a status of missing, leaving her in limbo, unable to grieve until she gets confirmation of the worst news, whilst forever hoping they’re both still alive.

Hence, she’s given domestic robot Sunny, voiced by Joanna Sotomura (Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare), made by her husand’s electronics company, who clearly have a rather cold-hearted management if they think this thing will fill the void. However, as as we learn at the start, these robots do have a bit of a malfunction to them and aren’t really to be trusted.

Suzie understood her husband worked in fridges, but as she learns from the company boss, Masa (Hidetoshi Nishijima) worked with robots, hence when Sunny is delivered to her, she has been programmed to behave with her husband’s mannerisms, with him showing that death is not the career setback it used to be, given that the character of her husband can appear in numerous flashbacks.

I did like how, since it’s set in near future, everyone has a Babelfish-like device that can translate languages on the fly, along with her big fancy house, albeit onre that doesn’t look strictly like a standard Japanese abode.

Amongst Suzie’s very sarcastic nature, and with the titular robot being very demanding, there’s potential intrigue in that the company are not letting on about something regarding the mechanical marvels, but it’s only a mild intrigue, and I’m not desperately gripped to learn more beyond the opening two episodes that are released on day one.

Sunny is on Apple TV+ from Wednesday July 10th. Initially, two episodes are available, and additional episodes will stream weekly.

It isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
