The Night Caller – also known as Black Cab, according to IMDB – sees former teacher-turned-cabbie Tony Conroy (Robert Glenister – Sherwood) all beaten up, before heading back to where his problems in life began, although it’s clear that he’s had enough, as life has dealt him a bad hand, and little by little, we’re dripfed as to what went wrong in the man’s life.
As such, he tunes into Sean’s show, well, Night Talk, hosted by Lawrence Brightway (Sean Pertwee – Dog Soldiers), because he feels an affinity with the DJ’s welcoming demeanour, against all of life’s endless, repetetive tedium.
As usual, the opener in these sorts of dramas is mostly set-up, with the main bulk still to come, and it’s safe to say, without giving spoilers, that Tony strikes up a friendship with cafe owner Rosa (Suzanne Packer – Doctor Who: The Tsuranga Conundrum), who’s getting harrassed by her ex, and Tony wants to know how best to deal with this.
At least, so far, The Night Caller is better-acted than most, but one important mystery does need solving… How come, every time Tony gets out of the swimming pool, the water is as still as if no-one’s been in it for hours?
