Thunder Road leads the new cinema releases May 31st 2019

Thunder RoadThis week, there are FIVE new films out for you to choose from, led by Thunder Road. Here are the titles, with more info below:

    Thunder Road
    A Vigilante
    Ma
    Sunset
Godzilla II: King of the Monsters

Thunder Road stars writer/director Jim Cummings as police officer Jim Arnaud, who faces a personal meltdown following a divorce and the death of his mother. It’s based on his 2016 short film of the same name, and also stars Macon Blair, who starred in the brilliant Blue Ruin and Green Room.

It looks a bit of an odd film, but there was something in the dialogue which grabbed me and left me wanting to know more about Jim’s situation.

Also stars: Kendal Farr, Nican Robinson

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

A Vigilante gives us Olivia Wilde in the titular role, who helps victims escape their domestic abusers.

The trailer for this is a little bit repetitive, but overall, it does look like it could be pretty good.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Ma looks to be a rather ridiculous psychological horror-thriller from Blumhouse, who made us suffer 2017’s Get Out (yes, it was terrible. If you thought otherwise, you’re wrong)

At first, I thought this was going to turn into a daft comedy as the titular Ma (Octavia Spencer) started off by agreeing to buy some beer for a group of teenagers, but then she let hem them party at her house, and while they thought things couldn’t get any better, suddenly, they’re all running for their lives.

So, as you might guess, I’m not particularly sold on this and, in fact, the trailer pretty much lays out the entire movie for you. However, that thumbnail on the video with her ‘stretched’ face IS quite scary…

Director: Tate Taylor
Also stars: Missi Pyle, Luke Evans, Juliette Lewis, Allison Janney, McKaley Miller, Diana Silvers

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Sunset centres around a young woman (Juli Jakab) who grows up to become a strong and fearless woman in Budapest before World War I. However, this trailer really isn’t winning me over, and director László NemesSon Of Saul was part-great and part-just plain weird!

Also stars: Vlad Ivanov, Susanne Wuest, Evelin Dobos

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Godzilla II: King of the Monsters is bringing back the big G after 2014’s disappointing recent movie.

In addition, 2017 brought us Kong: Skull Island, which was better, but the studio’s intention is for the two to meet up, that’ll come in 2020.

In the meantime, this follows the heroic efforts of the cryptozoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient superspecies, thought to be mere myths, rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

So, the 2017 film was okay, but this looks dull as hell.

Director: Michael Dougherty
