Yaga… Baba Yaga… which is also the name given to John Wick’s character, because people fear him like the boogeyman, although they don’t have to do that for too long, given how quick Wick is with a gun.
Charlie Rapp (Noah Reid – Outer Range) is a private investigator, looking into the disappearance of Henry Park (Hudson Williams – Heated Rivalry), a 4th year student who’s reportedly gone missing, 3 days earlier, with the speculation that he may have just gone off travelling.
His path crosses with standoffish female cop, Sgt Carson (Clark Backo – Venom: The Last Dance), but Rapp will jump at any female with a pulse, whether it’s motel receptionist Angel (Emilija Baranac), or University professor Dr Katherine Hargrove (Carrie-Anne Moss – Humans), who Henry recently interviewed for a podcast.
Of the characters, Rapp is a total arsehole, and there’s no-one particularly likeable in this series, although at one point, it’s amusing when Katherine says she’s never heard of John Wick, given that Carrie-Anne Moss starred with Keanu Reeves in the Matrix movies.
The problem with Yaga is that there’s nothing to recommend this. The characters are one-dimensional, there’s nothing to make me interested in what happened to Henry and where he’s gone. Plus, the addition of some silly, supernatural stuff along with the ‘Baba Yaga’ theme of the proceedings doesn’t help.
It ranks alongside Amazon Prime’s Carrie, when filed under “Why did they bother?”
Oh, one saving grace: the lovely Christin Park (Keeper) plays pathologist Jake Conrad, albeit giving a male name to a female actress.
Yaga is on Sky Atlantic from Saturday October 31st 2026.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
