My BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW of ZOOTOPIA 2 (aka ZOOTROPOLIS 2)

Zootopia 2 Zootopia 2 – aka Zootropolis 2 – presents us with bunny & fox duo Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason BatemanBlack Rabbit) as cops, which an early recap from 2016’s first film tells us how they foiled baddie Bellwether (Jenny SlateThe Electric State), and are now trusted to be law enforcers.

Well, trusted to a degree, since Chief Bogo (Idris ElbaHeads Of State) doesn’t wholly think they can work together, and the pair they have to prove that they can.

I hadn’t seen the first film, but figured from the trailer that the plot wasn’t exactly The Usual Suspects, but it wasn’t even the bare minimum. Zootopia 2 is just a lot of running around, and feels less like a film, and more like a series of disconnected scenes.

Beyond that, it’s clear that the $150m budget wasn’t spent on the script. There’s bland references such as a Burning Mammal Festival, not Burning Man; and odd choices of movie references such as one character acting like Jack Nicholson in the maze in The Shining, as well as Hannibal Lecter reference going on holiday, from the 2001 film, Hannibal.

I even took the time to select one of the few 3D performances, but while there’s some nice use of the format in an early car chase, most of the 3D in the film is just basic perspective and nothing to shout about. Plus, the 3D brightness of screen could be better. Yes, 3D films are darker than regular ones, but my Odeon’s screen 1’s projector has clearly seen better days. I’ve mentioned it to Guest Services in recent times – as I’ve seen a lot of films in there, but they don’t really care.

The original title of the film, similar to the first, is Zootopia 2, but it’s known over here and in other places as Zootropolis 2, for various legal reasons. I noticed that THREE times in the film, when a character would normally say “Zootopia“, they now say “Zootropolis“, but to avoid redoing the animation each time, when a character says it, they’re just offscreen for that moment.

Still, after two weeks in the cinema, Zootopia 2 has already taken a staggering $955m so far, so will easily eclipse the first film’s $1.025bn, yet with such little effort spent on the important things. No doubt, Zootopia 3 will come in 2034.

NOTE: There is a post-credits scene, as per the video below.

Zootopia 2 is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
