Dexter: Original Sin gives us the origin story for the ethical serial killer, originally played by Michael C Hall from 2006 to 2013, and with James Remar in flashbacks as his deceased father, Harry.
Here, our anti-hero is played by Patrick Gibson (Before We Die), and clearly I spend too much time thinking about the original programme, when I realise that in 2024, Christian Slater (as Harry) is OLDER than Remar was in 2006, but looks younger than him!
Some time in 2025, we’ll get Dexter: Resurrection, since (spoiler alert for something from 2021/2022), he was brown bread by the end of Dexter: New Blood, and as usual, young Dexter’s narrator is… well, regular Dexter, since it’s Mr Hall!
This new series goes back to 1991 where, with the young lad in med school, performing an autopsy, albeit disappointed that the cadaver has no blood. However, it doesn’t take long before we get to a gory scene, as a family has been slaughtered by an intruder, in a scene which also introduces the younger versions of the likes of Batista (James Martinez – Wolf Pack) and Masuka (Alex Shimizu) – the latter particularly exhibiting the usual traits of the original actor, along with current boss of Miami Metro PD, Capt. Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey – Ferrari) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Air I Breathe, Wolf Pack) as “the boss lady of forensics”, Tanya Martin.
The main plot points don’t take too long to show up, as Harry already knows about Dexter’s bloodthirsty urges, at which point we normally see Dexter act upon them, but does he have a nemesis from the opener? Well.. Tonight’s the night…
Gibson equips himself far better as Dexter than I thought he would do, even with the foppish hairstyle. Plus, there’s even a scene where Harry is about to leave hospital after a situation, that copies one from the original series, as Deb helps him pull a wheelie in a wheelchair.
However, while the new credits recreate the 2006 ones – and I do miss that music… hold the front page, since part-way through, it skips part of it! UGH! Just extend the credits and play it in full, FFS!!! I hate it when studios fuck around with things.
Please sort that out for future episodes! That said, the end credit music is also shorter. GRRRR!!!
Dexter: Original Sin is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Paramount+ from today. There is one episode initially, with further episodes added weekly, up to a total of ten.
Oddly, nothing was available for preview in advance.
