In Flight sees flight attendant Jo Conran (Katherine Kelly – Protection) in a spot of trub, as her son, Sonny (Harry Cadby – Inside Man), has been arrested in Sofia, Bulgaria, because he got into a fight, and it seems like the police are none too friendly and do everything by bribes.
Hmm… is it Bulgaria or the back of beyond, where you get put in the same jail as Mr Big, who’s in with the wardens?
Either way, he states he didn’t do it, but the lad he allegedly hit is brown bread.
Oddly, her colleagues have a whipround for the £5000 fees this will cost, but seriously, who has the money for that?!
But when it comes to the premise, she comes across some heavies who insist she carries some heroin through customs. If she refuses or tries to alert the authorities, then her son won’t be having an enjoyable time at His Majesty’s pleasure out there, and his first appeal hearing is four months away.
However, the first thing I thought about the baddies asking her to carry drugs home, is that if she does it once, they’ll insist upon it a second time, and more.
We’ve had similar dramas like this before, such as ITV’s No Return, with Sheridan Smith and Louis Ashbourne Serkis, and there’s elements of it in Series 1 of Jimmy McGovern’s Time. In Flight is played out reasonably well, making this watchable, but the script includes some obvious clichés and plot points, leaving this as a drama which doesn’t excite me in any way, and I don’t care whether or not Sonny did it, nor whether or not be spends his days forever behind bars.
That said, despite the daftness, it does have moments where it goes a bit ‘Channel 5‘, and we all know how ridculous they are! 😀
