Mr And Mrs Smith (2024) – The DVDfever Review – Amazon Prime Video – Maya Erskine, Donald Glover

Mr and Mrs Smith

Mr And Mrs Smith (2024) sees Amazon take on an existing franchise which began with an incredible 2005 action movie, starring then-married Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (who recently turned 60, but like Benjamin Button, seems to become younger as he gets older) who somehow didn’t know they were in the same job, and directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow).

Sadly, we never had a sequel to that, but it seems the only ideas in the running revolved around them getting married and/or having children. However, after a failed 2007 TV pilot with Martin Henderson and Jordana Brewster, and a non-existent 2011 Chinese remake with Donnie Yen and Cecilia Cheung, this has finally come to fruition with this 8-part TV series, led by Donald Glover (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Maya Erskine.

Prior to watching this, I initially wondered whether these actors were meant to look anything like Brad & Angelina, since they look nothing like them, but while I couldn’t originally say more about this at the time of originally posting the review, I now have an addition which I’ll put behind a spoiler header below:

Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Following an amusing interview for each of the pair, making it look like the return of Channel 4’s Star Test from the late ’80s, after meeting at the house, the couple’s first task is to follow a particular woman the following lunchtime – all the while trying to get to know each other, plus retrieving a particular package. But, what’s in it? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out.

So far, I’ve seen the first two episodes, the second of which also features John Tuturro as affluent auction attendee, Eric Shane, along with Paul Dano (Dumb Money) popping up at the ‘hot neighbour’, although one of these tasks features one of them being in a theatre, texting with their phone on bright for reasons you’ll discover. However, I figured that like when you’re in a cinema, it’ll light up the room, so surely someone would get them to stop? Well, watch on…

So far, Mr And Mrs Smith (2024) is interesting and a comfortable watch, as well as being pretty amusing and actually better than I was expecting, but it’s not massively gripping. I’ll watch more, though.

The first episode also concludes with a “Coming up this season”-type of set of clips, making it feel rather a lot like the film, as they bicker while fighting and bumping off baddies.

As an aside, originally, Phoebe Waller-Bridge was due to take the role of Jane Smith, but thankfully, she and Glover had ‘creative differences’, so she was no longer in the running. She’s still listed as an ‘executive producer’, although that’s a role that can mean anything, from doing some work to simply owning the company. We know she doesn’t own Amazon, so who knows? I’m not a fan of hers, so I’m glad she’s not in it, anyhoo.

Thanks to our friends at Prime Video for the screener prior to release.
