March 30th:

Sega MegaDrive Mini is being released with 40 games in September, and while they haven’t all been named yet, it will have a price of approximately $70 in the US, so that translates to around £60-70 by the time VAT is factored in, and don’t forget that in the US, the $70 price will have sales tax added on top.

It was announced at Sega FES 2019 in Japan, and as confirmed by Dreamcastguy, whose announcement/reaction video is below, the games announced for the Japanese unit include: Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Puyo Puyo 2, Shining Force, Castlevania Bloodlines, Powerball, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Rent-a-Hero, Space Harrier II, and Madou Monogatari Ichi.

Since a number of those have only ever been released in Japan, the list is expected to change for Europe and US markets, and thus, later, it was announced that the US unit (which will most likely be callled the Genesis Mini – as the MegaDrive was called the Genesis over there) will include: Altered Beast, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, Sonic The Hedgehog, Space Harrier II and ToeJam and Earl.

The unit will be made in-house by Sega -rather than AtGames who make the inferior units that have crap sound, and the software will be made by M2, who also developed Sega Ages, and there will be some regional oddities, such that the Japanese unit will include all of the Japanese, US and European versions of Castlevania: Bloodlines. We don’t yet know if this will extend to the other releases worldwide.

June 2018 saw the release of Sega MegaDrive Classics on the PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, with a whole 53 games on it, and can be bought for between £16-25 at present, depending on the format.

Sega MegaDrive Mini is released on September 19th 2019.
