The House Across The Street – The DVDfever Review – Channel 5 drama – Shirley Henderson

The House Across The Street The House Across The Street is the latest nightly Channel 5 drama, although this time round, the episodes are on Mondays and Tuesdays only.

Shirley Henderson plays Claudia, a nurse at the school, first spotting an ambulance outside, in the late hours, but isn’t sure what’s happened. Meanwhile, she has her own situation, as she’s had reconstruction following a double mastectomy after her cancer diagnosis.

A young girl she treated, Emily, has gone missing and the community are out searching for her. Plus, while the press have arrived, so have the police. Meanwhile, naturally, her parents – Owen (Ian Lloyd Anderson) and Sabine (Lisa Dwyer HoggBrookside: Unfinished Business) are beside themselves with worry.

Enter Craig Parkinson as popular new English teacher George (although as a big fan of Line of Duty, I’d have loved for his character’s name to have begun with ‘H) :D), who helps out, and Claudia suggests a vigil for the press to promote, and for everyone to go on the search. Meanwhile, her son needs a tutor, so can Craig also assist in that capacity?

Of the rest of the cast, one character has an infatuation with a particular bizarre hobby, but has to keep it in the shed outside because her husband won’t let her have the hobby in question in the house – personally, I wouldn’t store anything outside. It’d end up the way of anything I put in the cellar, years ago.

Shirley’s character is rather a kooky one, but then she frequently plays that type. Also, at one point, she pukes down the toilet – putting her hands on the toilet seat, her son comes in to ask how she is, and she immediately cups her hands round his face. Ewww… wash your hands first!

However, no spoilers about the outcome of the opener, of course. Safe to say that this is okay, but I’m not too wowed by it. I’ll watch a second to see how it pans out, though.

Any further updates will come after the respective episodes have been broadcast.
