The Wives opens with Beth Morgan (Jo Joyner – For Her Sins) looking for Annabelle, wife of Charlie, who’s gone missing and her mobile is left at the top of the cliff…
One year later, and wives Beth, Natasha (Angela Griffin) and Sylvie (Tamzin Outhwaite) all meet up again in Malta, going back to the very same holiday villa… Hmm… why would you return to the same place? Well, it turns out, the reunion is their 10th year of visiting.
We see Natasha has been out there for some time, and just had rumpy pumpy with her better half, Sean (Jonathan Forbes), yet still has to cover up her lady lumps for some reason. As for Sean, he buys boxes of returned stuff from Amazon for a cheap price and flogs on the contents
However, just as we got to the first ad break, Beth thinks she saw Annabelle, but no, it’s his new beau, Jade (Katie Clarkson-Hill) – who looks like a younger version of Annabelle as well as being a yoga instructor – and makes quite a fool of herself.
Add in Sky (Catriona Chandler), Annabelle’s teenage daughter, who’s still getting used to it all, and as usual very little happens in a Channel 5 opening episode to the drama. It throws in some potential bits of intrigue, but nothing to get excited about, as you know the meat and potatoes will come in later episodes… unless it’s something like Intruder, which was practically a vegan diet(!)

The Wives continues tomorrow on Channel 5 at 9pm, and runs Mon-Weds this week and next week.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
