Deadpool And Wolverine is a long time coming, following the pandemic, actor strikes, and especially since Deadpool 2 only came out two years after 2016’s first movie.
Plus, you can get an idea as to what I thought if it in general, since I saw it IMAX 3D, and then a few mins after that, I went straight back in and watched it again in regular 2D, to catch the lines I missed 😀
It’s fitting how this one contains many lines giving a nod to events that have happened behind the scenes, opening with Deadpool telling us how he came to get his own Marvel film, given that he tried to get a film made for years following his character appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Fox resisted for years because his strong language would require the film to have a 15-certicate (or ‘R’ in the USA), thus it wouldn’t get the revenue from families with children younger than 15 – in the UK at least, because in Americaland, the ‘R’ is just advisory.
And I wonder how many people, aside from movie nerds like me, will have realised that 20th Century Fox no longer exists, as it was changed to 20th Century Studios in 2020 after Walt Disney bought them out, but you’ll see when that comes up and while it still got a big reaction from the audience, I expect the number who knew about it would be about the same number as those who recognised Michael Bay’s cameo in Bad Boys 4: Ride Or Die.
As for how Logan comes back into this, I’ll let you discover that, but while I was not aware of the origins of his yellow outfit, as shown in the trailer and which excited a lot of fans, I thought the answer would have come in what was initially stated, regarding how this film is set in 2024, but 2017’s Logan – where he bought the farm – took place in 2029.
Obviously no spoilers as to how the plot develops, but the basics are that our hero’s timeline is falling apart after the death of its ‘anchor-being’, i.e. Logan, and Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) is going to crack open a device called a ‘Time Ripper’ to finish off the job, even though I would’ve thought if he just left him to his own devices, it would end by itself, anyway, so why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut?
Anyhoo, after finding a Wolverine variant who can help him sort this out, the pair end up in ‘the Void’, a Mad Max-style environment that’s ruled by bald villain and sister of Charles Xavier, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin, great as Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown Season 4, but now thinks there’s multiples of herself, as she adopted the nonsense from the American Left Gen Z brigade of describing yourself with pronouns, and claims to be a ‘they/them’. Of course you are, love. There, there, have a cookie.)
Everyone is now alive again, after redoing the timey-wimey stuff with Cable’s device at the end of last film, but because reasons that aren’t explained, our hero is separated from Vanessa, even though she’s at his birthday party, because Morena Baccarin has to collect the cheque.
As you’d expect, there’s some alternate lines and/or takes, such as when Wade’s talking to the TVA cops outside his apartment door, and in the trailer as he acknowledges Fox’s aquisition, they start swearing, leading to him retorting, they brandish their deadly truncheons, causing him to observe “Pegging may not be new for me, but it is for Disney”, then gives a knowing look. In the film, he still looks to camera and, but this time, he winks.
Similarly, a line in the trailer that’s not in the film comes when the Deadpool And Wolverine are in the diner, the latter tells the former to put his mask back on, Deadpool responding, “It’s super-hard to eat while wearing the mask”, to which Wolverine replies, “It’s super-hard to eat when you’re not(!)”
I’ll give a couple of examples of great lines (out of the many) when one TVA cop in another scene, makes a reference to Canada, leading to Deadpool harking back to Will Smith’s punching of Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022, “TAKE.. my country’s NAME.. out of your FUCKING MOUTH!”
Plus, a throwaway line about how “Audiences are used to longer runtimes”, since films HAVE got longer in recent years, so many hovering around the three-hour mark when they really didn’t need to, like Dune Part Two and Avatar: The Way Of Water; and another time when Wolverine shuts up one of the bad guys, knocking them out and commenting, “Not everyone gets a speech(!)”
Oh, and a Janet Jackson ’80s reference. It’s already been shown in the trailer how Wade wants to refer to himself as Marvel Jesus, but on one occasion adding… “MJ, if you’re nasty!”
Now, a section I’ll have to describe behind a spoiler header, as it lists some of the cameos…
Alas, despite Deadpool And Wolverine having some big fight scenes, it completely neglects Negasonic, Yukio, Colossus, Dopinder, Shatterstar and Vanessa, as a result, saving them only for the brief birthday party scene in Wade’s apartment. There’s also a complete lack of Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz), but then if they weren’t going to be prominently featured, why bother coming?
Okay, so there’s too many people to fit into the film if they were all to have a turn, but even still, I felt it lacking that they were just completely left out, and meanwhile, joke X-Force member Peter (Rob Delaney) was given even more lines this time.
There’s also no Weasel the bartender this time, because actor/comedian TJ Miller has been cancelled following various allegations which don’t appear to have had a conclusion, so instead, that’s happened to his movie career.
However, there’s plenty to get stuck into in this Wolverine-heavy entry in the series, especially Hugh Jackman who’s brilliant, given his crass, dismissive behaviour; and once again, Ryan Reynolds knocks it out of the park, particularly with a fight scene that comes later on to the tune of Madonna’s Like A Prayer, but I’ll say nothing about that, here.
This film also features a number of ‘frame breaks’ in IMAX 3D. If you don’t know what those are, then given that the film is shot in 2.39:1, thus has black bars on an IMAX screen. For digital IMAX, the content I’ll describe projects out across the rest of the 1.90:1 digital IMAX ratio, whereas on the handful of 1.43:1 screens in the UK (including Vue Printworks Manchester), the content can only go as far as the 1.90:1 aspect ratio and not beyond that, because it’s only been filmed for 1.90:1.
These are generally for some fight scene elements in the opening credits, plus a few bits later on, and example of which you can see below, but I will add that it’s a shame the 3D version is missing from the IMAX screens from Friday onwards.
This threequel also features plenty of great tunes, just a few of them coming below, and the track from the late, great Eric Carmen is rarely heard:
- Eric Carmen: Make Me Lose Control
Chris de Burgh: The Lady In Red
*NSYNC: Bye Bye Bye
The Goo Goo Dolls: Iris
Huey Lewis & The News: The Power Of Love
Zac Efron and Zendaya and Hugh Jackman and Keala Settle and The Greatest Showman Ensemble: The Greatest Show (From “The Greatest Showman”/Soundtrack Version)
Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta: You’re The One That I Want
However, there’s clearly a lot of stupid people in the world, because EVERYONE sane knows that almost every Marvel film has both mid- and post-credits scenes, and Deadpool And Wolverine is has both, albeit no main credits that we saw in the first two films, to the tunes of George Michael’s Careless Whisper and Pat Benetar’s We Belong, respectively. Presumably because for those two, they would now feature the names of the actors and actresses who have been sidelined.
For the info on what’s in the mid- and post-credits scenes, as well as who is who in all the cameos, check out my video below, and since a Short video can only last around 59-60 seconds, and what I had to say lasted 69, dudes, I had to speed it up very slightly.
Just before I watched Deadpool and Wolverine, I picked up the keychain I pre-ordered on the app, but this was a task in itself, because the app glitches more times than is good for it, but first, their app glitched for my cinema ticket, too, and my QR code disappeared from the app. I mentioned this to Odeon’s Twitter customer service, and they re-sent the email, showing it’s still valid. I booked this ticket approx 2 months ago, when tickets were available and I wanted my favourite IMAX seat. So, I didn’t want to lose that, especially after all this time!
However, I also ordered a the keychain last Wednesday, when they went live, to pick up on the day. It was £7.19 following the Limitless discount, and then they soon went out of stock, but then the QR code drifted into ‘Past Purchases’ (apparently because it’s classed under ‘Food and Drink’ and when I clicked on it to check for the code, I ‘started the order’, according to their Twitter)
Hence, I figured: why do I get the feeling that I’ll go to pick it up, only to find it’s not there because they’ve sold more than they actually have? However, I maintained in advance that if they do, Odeon can keep the £7.19, and buy me one of the same thing being sold in HMV for £12 from later this week!
Ultimately, I got it, but below is what I’ve DM’d Odeon, as their app needs the suggestion so they fix it.
This is because their app leads to a bad situation where I’m left trying to justify why I should have something I’ve legally paid for – because the app claims I’ve already collected it (despite not having been in the cinema since last Sunday, before they were available to preorder), and the manager is left trying to work out where one of the 100 has got to, because there were just 9 left at the time I arrived for my film, with 9 people down as still being left to pick their keychain up.
So, it’s not fair on either of us.
It’s the first time I’ve used the food and drink part of the app, which is an odd place for keychains, because it’s not something that should be taken internally. I didn’t even realise I’d pressed ‘start order’ because all I did is the same after every time I book a film – I go through to check the QR code is present, so I know the booking has worked. This is because of the number of times it glitches: such as not letting me book a ticket, because it claims I already have.
I made this solution suggestion for the app. It would be for the following to come up when you seemingly press ‘start order’, with all capital letters written below as it should appear on the app, since if it had, I would’ve realised, and stopped at that point: “DO NOT PROGRESS UNTIL YOU ARE AT YOUR ODEON CINEMA!”
followed by two options: “YES, I’m in the cinema!” or “NO, go back!”
Hopefully, they’ll take that on board, but on the off-chance I order anything like this again, I won’t click on ANYTHING before I’m there in person.
Deadpool and Wolverine is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
